Nikon
The big news at Nikon for any discipline of photographer is the launches of both the flagship D4 SLR and the more affordable yet no-lessgame-changing D800 model, the latter offering an amazingly high 36.3-megapixel resolution. While, naturally, that sort of pixel count isn't crucial for 6x4 or 6x9 event photography print sizes, both the D800 and D4 will naturally be an asset to any social or events photographer willing or able to stump up the cash.
Nikon's D4 includes a new full-frame 16.2 megapixel FX-format sensor plus an expandable light sensitivity range stretching from ISO50 up to ISO 204,800 to provide 'see in the dark' capabilities. Also on board is an EXPEED 3 imageprocessor.
A new AF system features an advanced version of Multi-Cam 3500FX, making it fast and moreover reliable, for up to 11fps continuous shooting.
Also a big draw for those photographing sporting events is the fact that 51 AF points plus 3D Colour Matrix Metering II and face detection are provided.
With technology featured in the D4, the D800s also offers a full frame FX format
CMOS sensor, with the option of 15.4 megapixels in DX (crop) format, 5:4 or 1.2x. For those looking to perhaps film corporate events (or weddings) as well as take stills, Full HD broadcast quality video is further offered with a choice of 30, 25 or 24fps. An Expeed 3 processor also features as does an expandable ISO range running from ISO50 to 25,600. USB 3.0 output is provided for the first time on a Nikon, while 51 point AF, 3D Colour Matrix Metering plus 900-shot battery duration swell the impressive stats.
Also new and of interest are the top-of-the-line SB910 Speedlight plus WT-5 wireless transmitter. With three illumination patterns available, the SB910 automatically detects whether it is being used in conjunction with Nikon FX (full frame) or DX (APS-C) format DSLRs and adjusts the light distribution angle. Useful perhaps for events photographers who want to save time by beaming images to their printer set-up rather than fiddling with memory cards and USB cables, the D4 compatible WT-5 transmitter is compact and high performance and powered by the camera body.
