As noted, whilst most event photographers would say workflow on the day (or evening) is how you'll earn your money, there are also post-event sales to be made, online being the easiest and most direct route. Theimagefile.com offers a potential online revenue generator for photographers of all descriptions, though its workflow makes it particularly enticing to event photographers.
As MD Howard Butterfield explains, images can be uploaded direct to the site via FTP from a camera Wi-Fi attachment, PDA or smartphone - providing an alternative workflow to printing at an event.
"Obviously if you're printing you can't be shooting, which means an extra pair of hands and additional cost," he reasons. "And then a lot of events are outside so you have to consider the weather and if a van or marquee is needed."
Howard believes that attendees at an evening event where drink will have been flowing might prefer a print sent the next day. "You can simply sell e-commerce vouchers at the event, and sweeten the deal with two prints for the price of one afterwards," Howard advises. With orders taken via the site, photographers can do the print fulfilment themselves, use a preferred printer or link up with the likes of Sim2000, PhotoBox or Loxley Colour.
The Image File's service is subscription based, with a free eight-page website and a month's trial offered for £1. Thereafter with 20% discount for Societies' members it works out at £30 per month + VAT.
Of course, at the end of the day there's nothing like expert advice from those who have 'been there, done that'. As well as supplying essential equipment, System Insight's Stuart Morley holds 'Event Photography for Profit' training days once a month, for which Societies' members are offered a £75 discount (when quoting 'SWPPPIM'). Aimed at those getting into the business plus practising photographers wanting to maximise profit, the course covers how to get workflow sales and marketing exactly right - in combination the lifeblood of any event photography business.
